Lily Chifor had been playing with her older sister Aria in Baan Baa, near Narrabri, in the state's north-west on Friday night when the toddler wandered onto the railway tracks and into the path of a passing freight train. The tragedy has not only devastated Lily's family but also the small village they had just called home, Seven News reported. Recent footage showed Lily giggling and dancing with her older sister as a male family member watched on. Police have revealed they are treating Lily's death as a tragic accident, adding that the parents were not to blame. 'Our understanding is that the child was just playing. This is a really tragic case of a child that had gone to play in a bad location,' Oxley Police Superintendent David Cooper told reporters. 'The child was with a number of other children. 'The parents were not in the immediate vicinity, but we are aware of where the parents were and the supervision of the child is not in doubt.' One-year-old Lily Chifor died after being hit by a freight train in Baan Baa on Friday night Lily (right) and her family had moved to Baan Baa just days earlier Paramedics rushed to the scene at about 7.50pm on Friday, where they treated the critically injured toddler. Lily was rushed to Narrabri Hospital, where she later died. The accident was witnessed by a number of bystanders. 'I want to highlight that this is nothing but an absolute tragedy and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family,' Supt Cooper said. 'This will have a broad impact on the community, and we want to make sure everybody gets the support they need. 'I can only imagine the horror and grief that they (the family) are in at the moment.' Baan Baa was home to 166 residents during the 2021 census. A local pub, which is the only business in town, remain closed on Saturday out of respect to the grieving family. 'When it happens in a tiny little village like that, where everyone knows everyone, and a community like this, this is really, really hard to take,' Narrabri mayor Darrell Tiemens said. Lily was struck and killed after she wandered onto train tracks which cross through the centre of the town (pictured) Cr Tiemens added that safety measures were in place. 'There’s boom gates, there’s lights, there’s every safety measure available there,' he said. The train driver, 22, was not injured but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. He is assisting police with their inquiries. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
