The pirate culture in One Piece is transgenerational, with retired pirates laying the groundwork for emerging adventurers to continue in their path. Gol D. Roger, the greatest pirate in the series, passed the successor torch to Shanks, with the symbolic act of the straw hat, setting up a new era for Shanks and the pirates of his generation. Similarly, Shanks gave the straw hat to Luffy, who is now a behemothic force to be reckoned with in One Piece. In some drafts of the Egghead arc, Oda teased Bonney wearing the straw hat Luffy wears, underscoring the possibility that the young pirate might settle into Luffy’s shoes as heir to his legacy. Bonney May Not Become a Member of the Straw Hats, But She Will Continue Its Legacy Bonney, first introduced as a leading member of the Worst Generation and a prime contender to find the One Piece, has developed strong connections to the Straw Hats, leading fans to theorize on the status of her character. When Oda first teased the character wearing Luffy’s symbolic straw hat, it was expected that Bonney would become the final Straw Hat member. Earlier in the series, Oda affirmed that Luffy’s crew would include 10 pirates. Consequently, with one spot being left open, Bonney was the prime choice. However, given recent events, Bonney may hold deeper significance than fans think. In an interview with Oda, the mangaka stated that we should “keep an eye on her” as the story moves forward. Oda’s revelation, coupled with the earlier drawings of Bonney donning the Straw Hat, there is a strong possibility that she might be taking the baton over from Luffy. Another factor to consider is the parallels between both in the egghead arc. In chapter 1118 of the One Piece manga, Bonney, using her Age-Age Fruit, displayed a Gear 5 transformation, mimicking Luffy’s signature power. The saga subtly underpins a key connection between the two characters that Oda intends to flesh out as One Piece navigates its final saga. The Straw Hat May Signify That Bonney May Be At The Center of the Next Generation of Pirates The straw hat has been at the epicenter of extremely important figures central to One Piece’s story. First off, Joy Boy was known to have worn a straw Hat; Gol D. Roger, the greatest pirate, donned a straw hat; Shanks wore it, albeit briefly; and Luffy is combating the World Government with the straw hat being his exclusive symbol. Ultimately, the straw hat’s heavy significance is tied to One Piece’s worldbuilding, and Bonney’s involvement hints at a deeper impact that fans imagine. Eventually, Bonney’s part to play in the grand scheme of things should be worth the revelation.
