Oncology Clinic Trial: Verdict against Pesevska to Be Announced 22 September

In the frames of the trial over the Oncology Clinic case, the Criminal Court will announce the verdict against oncologist Meri Pesevska, who has confessed, on 22 September.

Pesevska, two fellow oncologists, and ex-Clinic Director Nikola Vasev are charged with unscrupulous treatment of patients. The act foresees a prison sentence of up to three years.

Prosecutor Ana Gogovska Jakimovska, in her closing arguments, on Wednesday, stated that Pesevska’s confession and remorse had been honest, adding that during the entire procedure, both before the Public Prosecutor’s Office and at the Court, her conduct had been exemplary.

However, she stressed that there were aggravating circumstances as well, that is, that the actions had resulted in the worsening of the health condition of seven patients.

“As an oncologist, she had an increased duty with regards to attention”, Gogova Jakimovska underlined, pointing out also that there had been unauthorised access and use of the facsimile in continuity.

Considering all circumstances and confession, the Prosecutor’s Office is proposing that the Court find her guilty and penalise her according to the law, Gogovska Jakimovska emphasised.

On the other hand, Pesevska’s attorney, Vlatko Kitanovski, in the closing arguments, stated that though his client had confessed that she’d acted through negligence, “we have to be honest and ask ourselves whether this doctor should be seen as a criminal”.

As he pointed out, the fact that she shared her personal data and facsimile with another doctor was not about intent or benefit, but rather aimed to help patients.
