On the path to net zero at the Channel Islands Coop

Sponsored content AT CI Coop, sustainability isn’t just a buzz-word, it’s a commitment backed by science, strategy and community action. In 2025, we have taken bold strides toward our ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions in our direct operations by 2035, and across our entire value chain by 2040. Our latest Carbon Footprint Report shows a 5% year-on-year reduction in total greenhouse-gas emissions, despite sales growth and a larger operational footprint. While this puts us slightly behind the trajectory set by our net-zero pathway, it marks a strong and credible start. Rather than beginning with the biggest contributors in our value chain, we have focused first on implementing a direct emissions reduction plan targeting refrigerants, electricity and company vehicles. A dedicated decarbonisation strategy for our value chain will follow in the first half of 2026, addressing the most material sources of indirect emissions with the same rigour and ambition. Science-based and future-focused Our science-based targets have now been officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), including those for Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) emissions. These targets align with the global effort to limit warming to 1.5°C and reflect our commitment to the British Retail Consortium’s net-zero pathway. For our direct operations, we have set a 2035 net-zero target for scope 1 and 2 emissions, aiming for a 90% absolute reduction from our 2023/24 baseline of 952 tCO2e. This trajectory exceeds the minimum SBTi reduction rate and positions CI Coop as a sustainability leader across the islands. Smarter stores, greener choices In recent years, we have implemented a range of energy-efficiency upgrades across our operations. These include improvements to refrigeration systems, lighting, heating and ventilation and the installation of monitoring tools to better understand energy and water use. These actions have helped reduce our direct emissions and build a foundation for future progress, demonstrating what’s possible and informing the next phase of our decarbonisation strategy. These initiatives form part of a broader, long-term decarbonisation plan that spans the next decade. The plan combines operational improvements, infrastructure upgrades and strategic investments to reduce emissions across our estate. It’s designed to be flexible and scalable, adapting to new technologies, evolving regulations and the unique energy context of the Channel Islands, while keeping us firmly on track to meet our 2035 net-zero target. Community-powered progress We recognise that grid decarbonisation in Jersey and Guernsey is outside our direct control. That’s why we are exploring community renewable partnerships to accelerate local energy transition. These partnerships will help close the ambition gap and ensure our net-zero goals are resilient to future uncertainties. If you’re part of a local organisation or initiative and see potential for collaboration, we’d love to hear from you. What net zero means to us At CI Coop, net zero means taking responsibility for the emissions we create and doing everything we can to reduce them at source. It’s about making lasting changes to how we operate, not relying on offsets or temporary fixes. For us, it’s a long-term commitment to running our business in a way that respects the environment, supports our communities and builds resilience for the future. Why it matters Every step we take brings us closer to a future where our operations and supply chain work in harmony with the planet. By investing in science-based targets, energy-smart solutions and community partnerships, we’re building a Coop that’s not only sustainable but resilient, responsible and ready for tomorrow.
