Omaha woman sentenced in shotgun slaying of her boyfriend

A 33-year-old woman was sentenced Wednesday in connection with the shotgun slaying of her boyfriend in 2023.

Douglas County District Judge Katie Benson sentenced Alyssa Roman to six to eight years in prison for manslaughter in the death of Alan Critser, 33. Roman will receive credit for 629 days served. Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Roman, who had been initially charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony, reached a deal with prosecutors in August and pleaded no contest to manslaughter. Roman and Critser shared a home on North 55th Plaza, west of the Mormon Bridge Road, and were in a relationship, according to court documents.

Omaha police officers were called to a nearby home shortly after 5 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2023, for a report of a home invasion, police said. Residents of the home told police that a woman with pink hair, wearing only a shirt, had forcibly entered the home.

Officers traced the path of the woman, later identified as Roman, to her home on 55th Plaza. Officers, according to the arrest warrant, observed Roman fleeing out the back door and took her into custody.

The warrant described Roman as “displaying signs of excited delirium.” She was transported to Immanuel Medical Center for evaluation and was medically cleared.

Inside the home, the warrant said, officers discovered what appeared to be blood and other matter on the walls in the hallway at the top of the main staircase. Critser was found in the primary upstairs bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

A shotgun was located in a separate upstairs bedroom with women’s clothing placed over the tip of the shotgun’s barrel.

During an interview at Omaha Police Headquarters, Roman is said to have provided a statement indicating that Critser “did not shoot himself and that they were the only two individuals present in the residence at the time the homicide occurred.”
