Old Chinese Star Stuns Tennis World With Incredible Stats to Defeat Cameron Norrie at ATP Chengdu
The Asian Swing often acts as a launchpad for young Asian talent who are ready to carve a niche for themselves in the tennis world. Years back, it was Kei Nishikori who made a name for himself by performing well in this part of the season. Fast forward to 2025, and this tradition is still in place, as the Asian Swing began with a bang at ATP Chengdu. Earlier today, a massive upset took place as a 20-year-old Chinese star, Zhou Yi, knocked out fifth seed Cameron Norrie in a thrilling first-round match.
It was a see-saw battle, going right till the final set tiebreaker, with Yi holding his nerves to edge past Norrie. Yi, who is ranked 304th in the world, secured the biggest victory of his career and announced himself on the big stage. As for Norrie, it was a disappointing loss to a player ranked much below him, and he will rue his missed opportunities to close out the match. Norrie won the opening set 7-6 (3), but Yi came back strongly to win the next two sets. Soon after the encounter, the Chinese star’s insane stats went viral as he was too hot to handle.
Throughout the match, Yi hit an incredible 22 aces and 49 winners to outclass his opponent. Norrie had few answers to Yi’s domination from the second set as he tightened his grip on his home turf. Moreover, Yi saved six of the seven break points he faced, as his serve was broken just once throughout the three sets. It goes to show how reliable his serve is, something which he will bank on throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, owing to his low ranking, Yi hadn’t received a direct entry into the main draw. He was handed a wildcard entry by the organizers, who would be proud of the way he played today. Furthermore, Yi has regularly played on the ATP Challenger Tour, and the victory today was just his second ATP Tour-level victory after winning a Davis Cup encounter recently. Even as the emotions of the win today were difficult to handle, Yi opened up about how he felt after the match.
A moment to cherish for Zhou Yi
Yi is among the several Chinese stars carrying his country’s flag at ATP Chengdu. Dubbed an important event, the tournament boasts of renowned players, one among whom was Norrie. Even as his campaign came to an end early, it was one of the brightest moments as far as Yi was concerned.
During an interview with Sky Sports after the match, Yi said, “I’ve been waiting for a whole year to come back here. I did it by myself this time and I got this. I’m so happy, I cannot explain, I’m just so happy. Well it’s been a tough year for me. I had to go get some wins and try to keep my points up because this is the first time I got so many points in my life [laughing].
“But I feel like mentally I’ve been improving a lot. I feel like I’m not the same [inaudible] as before. I’ve definitely improved. Maybe that’s why I had the ability to come through today. I’m just so happy,” he added.
Yi will next face Christopher O’Connell in the second round clash on Friday. Can he maintain the momentum and dig deep in his home tournament? Let us know your predictions in the comments below.
