STILLWATER — Doug Meacham doesn’t think there will be noticeable changes on gameday in Oklahoma State’s contest against Baylor.
The game management won’t be altered much when the new interim coach leads the Cowboys. The only recognizable thing may be seeing Meacham on the sideline after he began in the press box.
“I think what’s important is to just keep it the same. And everybody’s kind of entrenched in what they do as an assistant. We got guys responsible for red zone, goal line, you know, blitz, protections, things like that, routes, different areas of field, down in distances, and we’re just going to kind of keep rolling.”
Saturday is only day five with Meacham adding head coach duties to his offensive coordinator role.
Nothing has changed much in his day-to-day routine.
“It’s been pretty good. And again, I attribute it to the culture here, what Mike (Gundy) built and these kids,” he said. “They show up, they work and it makes it a lot easier.”
Rob Glass, the program’s strength and conditioning coach, has been asked to handle administrative duties to allow Meacham to focus on football.
“He helps a lot … I’ve never been a head coach and he’s been around a long time as well. So a lot of the administrative-type things and travel and, you know, like a chief of staff-type guy,” Meacham said. “It allows me to just kind of focus on the team. So he’s doing a good job.”
Would Meacham like to be OSU’s permanent head coach?
“I don’t know if anybody wouldn’t want to be that,” he said. “That’s not really my goal right now. My goal is to do the best I can for these kids and go from week to week. That’s it. I’m not really looking to be that guy at all. If it happens, it does. It’s definitely not on my agenda at all at this point.”
Odds against Cowboys
After Oklahoma State celebrated a Big 12 championship in 2011, undoubtedly the Cowboys’ fans expected more league titles to follow.
Only pain has followed. There were three second-place finishes (2013, 2015, 2016) and two losses in the Big 12 championship game in 2021 and 2023.
The 2023 setback to Texas started a 10-game losing streak against Big 12 competition that will continue into Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. home contest against Baylor.
OSU enters the game against the Bears as a 20.5-point underdog.
Oddsmakers have even lower expectations in the 16-team league race.
Oklahoma State has the lowest odds to win a conference championship. The Cowboys enter league play as a 300/1 longshot, which is the bottom of the schools.
According to BetOnline, Texas Tech (5/2) is the favorite followed by Arizona State and TCU, which shares 5/1 odds.
The last three schools are Colorado (100/1), West Virginia (175/1) and OSU (which opened teh season at 40/1).
On the call
Saturday’s Baylor-OSU game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
The 44th meeting between the schools will be called by Lowell Galindo (play-by-play), Aaron Murray (analyst) and Lauren Sisler (sideline reporter).
Galindo is a former lead anchor for the Longhorn Network and has also anchored ESPNU. Murray, a former Georgia quarterback, has often been seen on the SEC Network. Sisler has been on ESPN and the SEC Network since 2016. She’s known for her “sideline shimmy,” a dance which went viral after she was working to shake her nerves before going on camera.
OSU has won three of the past five games between the schools, but lost 38-28 in Waco last season.
Rolling into Arizona
The Big 12 has announced the start time for OSU’s game at Arizona on Oct. 4. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Arizona Stadium.
It will be the 10th meeting between the schools. The last contest was in 2012 when the Wildcats defeated Oklahoma State 59-38.
That game concluded a home-and-home series between the schools. OSU took a 37-14 victory in Stillwater in 2011.
The 2025 contest will be broadcast on TNT.
