STILLWATER — Oklahoma State headed to Tuesday’s practice with a new coach leading the football program.
Doug Meacham was introduced as OSU’s interim coach for the remainder of the season. He’ll take over for Mike Gundy, who was fired earlier in the afternoon by athletic director Chad Weiberg.
Meacham, who is also the team’s offensive coordinator, will handle football duties while strength and conditioning coach Rob Glass will take care of administrative duties.
Meacham will make his debut at Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. home game against Baylor. It’s the Big 12 opener for the Cowboys.
Meacham, 60, has been a longtime assistant coach since 1988 at eight different schools from the junior college ranks to the FCS level. This will be his first time running a program.
Weiberg was asked why he turned to Meacham.
“We had some conversation about (naming Meacham) I think for a number of different reasons. I felt like he was the person who, by elevating him to that position, would be the least disruptive to all of the other positions,” Weiberg said. “If we were elevating someone else, I think it could create more moving parts than we already have. He is an alum, so I think he has an understanding of this place and the culture and the program. That was also a factor.”
The only coaches on the OSU staff with college head coach experience are offensive line coach Andrew Mitchell (Snow College, 2018-20) and analyst Gary Gibbs (Oklahoma, 1989-84). Offensive quality control coach Clint Bowen was Kansas’ interim head coach for eight games during the 2014 season, taking over for Charlie Weis.
Meacham is an OSU alum. He was an offensive lineman from 1983-87.
His coaching links to the Cowboys football program started as a graduate assistant at OSU from 1989-91. He worked from 2005-12 under Gundy as the program’s tight ends and inside receivers coach.
During the past off-season, Gundy rehauled his staff and named Meacham as the offensive coordinator. Meacham had spent the previous five seasons at TCU, which included a mid-season coaching change when Gary Patterson was let go in 2021.
Quarterback Zane Flores said his relationship with Meacham and quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns has helped him during the nonconference struggles.
“They’ve both been very supportive and trying to help me out and give me the best plays,” Flores said. “They’ve been trying to coach me up the best they can. And they’ve both been really good. So we’re just continuing to grow that relationship through the season.”
