FOUR KEYS
1. New defensive voice: Oklahoma State will hit the road with a new leader with interim defensive coordinator Clint Bowen. Last week, the Cowboys appeared to play with new energy when Doug Meacham took things over as an interim head coach. What will Bowen’s defense look like? The focus needs to be on veteran Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita as well as a running attack that’s rushed for at least 100 yards in the first four games for the first time since 2018.
2. Can a TD pass be thrown?: OSU’s Zane Flores has played in four games and is still seeking his first touchdown throw. The Cowboys’ air attack has only produced two scoring throws (Hauss Hejny, Sam Jackson V) all season, which is near the country’s worst. Arizona’s pass defense has been stingy with zero touchdown passes allowed this season, which is the nation’s best. Only Nebraska hasn’t allowed a passing touchdown. Can Oklahoma State break the trends?
3. Good news in threes: Cowboys placekicker Logan Ward has developed into his team’s most dependable player. During fall camp, the Edmond Deer Creek graduate was battling FCS All-American Gabe Panikowski for the starting job. Ward has been nails for OSU by making all seven of his attempts, including a 49-yard kick. Ward has connected on three kicks of 40-yards plus.
4. Run it down: Rodney Fields (32 carries, 182 and Trent Howland (22 carries 115 yards) have anchored the Oklahoma State ground game over the past four games. Both players have missed one game this season and didn’t let it slow their progress. Fields ran for a team-high 113 yards against Tulsa, while Howland’s top game was an 84-yard performance against Baylor.
