In what can only be described as a feat of whimsical organizational prowess, nearly 2,000 Ohio State University students, staff, and fans donning Brutus-themed conical party hats filled the Tom W. Davis Gym to celebrate a mascot's birthday and, just maybe, leave their mark in the Guinness World Records. Buckeye spirit overflowed, as attendees vied to smash a somewhat obscure global benchmark: the largest gathering of people in party hats. The previous record, held by a girls' school in the United Kingdom since 2019 with 1,161 participants, was about to confront collegiate competition. With Guinness World Record Adjudicator Chloe McCarthy on the scene, the throng—clad in festive hats secured by elastic strings under each chin—stood for a full minute to earn their record-breaking star. When the count concluded, according to an Ohio State University report, the new champion number was 1,924, leaving the prior milestone in the proverbial dust. There was more to the bash than hat-wearing and record-breaking, however. Attaching significance to the lighthearted gathering, the event was linked to initiatives, including the Jeffrey Schottenstein Program for Resilience and the Nina and Ryan Day Resilience Fund, promoting mental health and resilience among the campus community. And while ice cream was consumed and "Happy Birthday" was sung, Senior Vice President for Student Life Melissa Shivers encapsulated the atmosphere, saying, "I absolutely love birthdays. They are my favorite thing in the whole wide world," and emphasized the event's deeper community and appreciation angle, according to Ohio State News. Dr. K. Luan Phan, occupying the Jeffrey Schottenstein Endowed Chair of Psychiatry and Resilience at Ohio State, didn't miss the chance to inject a note of gravity into the frolic. Celebrating individuals who practice empathy, he reminded those gathered, wearing hats aiming to set a record, of the broader implications of kindness and unity. "What makes us whole is being kind and caring for others," Phan stated during his remarks, as per Ohio State News, nudging the jovial cohort to embrace and embody these virtues in daily life.
