Ogun East APC leaders reject Gbenga Daniel’s alleged suspension

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Ogun East Senatorial District have expressed their full support for Senator Gbenga Daniel, describing his alleged suspension as “fake and unconstitutional”. The leaders, representing all 103 wards across the district’s nine local government areas, clarified that the purported suspension was reported in Ward 4, not the Senator’s Ward 12. In August 2025, a trending Facebook post announced that the State Executive Committee of the APC had ratified a suspension by Ward 4 Excos following the report of a purported Investigation Committee, which was set up to probe alleged anti-party activities by Senator Gbenga Daniel. DAILY POST reports that last Wednesday, Lekan Adeniran, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, issued a statement reaffirming that the Senator’s suspension remained in effect, warning that any engagements with him as a party member would be invalid. Adeniran stated that the party had communicated this position in an official letter to the APC National Chairman, citing what it described as Daniel’s “continued public disregard for party discipline” despite his suspension. According to him, the letter, dated October 3, 2025, and jointly signed by the state chairman, Yemi Sanusi, and state secretary, Tella Aderibigbe, indicated that Gbenga Daniel was suspended on August 19, 2025, adding that the decision had been formally communicated to him. Responding on Tuesday at a press conference titled “The State of APC in Ogun State” held in Sagamu, the district party leaders challenged the legitimacy of the suspension. They maintained that the issue was politically motivated, linked to the 2027 elections and the APC ticket for the Ogun East Senatorial District. Speaking at the conference, the senator’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, insisted that the announcements should not be taken seriously, noting that there had been no official communication of any offence, no allegation, no invitation to an investigative panel, and no letter of suspension. He said, “We are talking about a former governor of the state and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. What happens to the Chairman of the Party in the State? Where is the State Secretary of the party? It therefore suggests that such announcements cannot be given any seriousness, especially because there was no official communication about any offence, no allegation levied, no invitation to attend any investigative panel, and no letter of suspension. “We hereby respond as follows: Is it appropriate in a well-structured party like ours, where we have a state chairman, secretary and other elected officials, for the chief press secretary of the state government and an appointee, most especially the spokesperson of the governor, who himself is an interested party or who has a vested interest, to speak for and on behalf of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State? “To answer this challenge, we have no doubt, and let no one be deceived, that this is all connected to the politics of 2027 and especially the APC ticket for the Ogun East Senatorial District.” Similarly, Prof. Yemi Oke, SAN, counsel to the process, disclosed that a formal letter had been sent to the APC Ogun State chapter requesting official documents regarding the alleged suspension. Oke further stated that copies of any petitions submitted by members of Ward 4 or 12 against Gbenga Daniel, as well as an acknowledged copy of the suspension letter signed by the Senator, should be provided. The press conference was attended by the Senator’s media aide, Steve Oliyide; Yemi Oke (SAN); Remi Hassan; Gen. Olumuyiwa Okunowo (retd); Giwa Niyi-Osoba; Korede Okusanya; Ronke Oduneye; Barr. Babatunde Adesanya; Josephine Makanjuola; Bankole Osisanya; Wole Olubena; Abiodun Adesanya; Dele Osifade; and Ganiyat Busari, among others.
