Odds, picks, best bet for Wednesday's clash

Who is ready to bet on one of the worst teams in college football on Wednesday night? The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders are 1-6 on the season. They lost to Austin Peay, an FCS program, by 20 points in front of their home crowd. The Blue Raiders’ lone win saw them score a last-gasp touchdown against Nevada, another bottom-feeder in FBS. There has been very little for Derek Mason to cling to in Year 2 in Murfreesboro, but the stars might just be aligning for the Blue Raiders to upset Jacksonville State on Wednesday night. One of the great unintended consequences of Conference USA playing a host of midweek games in October was that it allowed us to get a feel for the members of this illustrious conference. With only a couple of games to focus on, it allows us to pick up on little things, like Middle Tennessee’s effort against Delaware seven days ago. The Blue Raiders were 9.5-point underdogs in that tilt, and kept things respectable in a 31-28 defeat. Mason’s job isn’t going to be saved by only losing by three points to Delaware, but it was an encouraging sign. It was also the third straight one-score defeat for Middle Tennessee in a row. The Blue Raiders are bad, but they’re also unfortunate to be 1-6. The opposite is true of Jacksonville State, which is 3-0 in conference play, but just a couple of weeks removed from surviving a scare from Sam Houston State. Betting on College Football? Middle Tennessee is at the foot of the table, but has shown some signs of life without getting rewarded. Throw in some funky weather in the forecast for Murfreesboro, and you’ve got all the right ingredients for an upset on Wednesday.
