EXCLUSIVE: Young Mazino (Beef) and Stephen Root (Barry) have signed on for supporting roles in October, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier’s new film for A24, which earlier today added Stanley Simons to the ensemble, as we told you first.
No word yet on character details for the duo, or anyone else in the cast. The logline is being kept under lock and key, as well, though sources have described the project as a fugitive thriller set during Halloween.
As previously announced, Cory Michael Smith will lead the cast of the pic produced and financed by A24, with Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, and Stanley Simons also in the mix. Rich Peete (Neighborhood Watch) will produce alongside Eli Bush (Central), as well as Jeremy Saulnier & Skei Saulnier (Niteowl Films).
Emmy-nominated for his work in the first season of Netflix’s Beef opposite Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, Mazino is otherwise best known for his role of Jesse in the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us. Previously in business with A24 via a role on Opus, their cult thriller starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the actor is repped by UTA, M88, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Root is a veteran character actor who recently garnered his first Emmy nomination for his turn as Barry Berkman’s criminal cohort Monroe Fuches on HBO’s Barry. Otherwise best known for projects like Office Space, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and King of the Hill, he most recently appeared in Prime Video’s chart-topper Heads of State, which is now the streamer’s fourth most-watched film of all time. He is repped by Gersh, as well as Colton Gramm at Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
