Ocean City beachgoers are likely to see some changes to the resort’s longstanding fireworks tradition, after the Town Council this week approved a contract extension but left the fate of Monday night Boardwalk shows in question.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to extend a contract with Celebration Fireworks through 2027 for displays on the Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, and the popular “Sundays in the Park” series. But instead of locking in the Monday Boardwalk shows — in place since about 2009 — councilmembers agreed to leave those nights “flexible” pending further review.
The city’s Tourism Commission is expected to revisit the schedule on Oct. 21, with recommendations to return to the full council later this fall.
Tourism and Business Development Director Tom Perlozzo and Procurement Manager Matt Perry presented the fireworks contract and a possible scope revision. Councilman John Gehrig immediately questioned whether Monday shows still made sense.
