A U.S. immigration case allowed part of the story. Then jurors explored the shadows of doubt: A local jury deadlocked 8-4 in favor of acquittal for Doris Aleman-Bonilla, a Honduran woman charged with illegal reentry. Jurors Kevin Cossentine and David Weakley described how limited evidence and unanswered questions led them to doubt the government’s case. After two mistrials, Aleman-Bonilla accepted a misdemeanor plea deal, then was immediately detained by ICE despite the court outcome.
