ForbesNYT Connections Today: Hints, Answers For Sunday, September 28By Erik Kain
Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the start of a new week! I’m very happy to be back with you for another run of Connections, taking you through to the weekend when my colleagues Paul and Erik take up the baton here.
If you don’t know me by now (there’s another good song for you), I like to start the Monday editions of these columns with a feel-good number. I’d love for you to have a smile on your face and maybe even dance around a little as we start this new week.
Since Daft Punk were a part of a Fortnite event this weekend, I’m compelled to go with a song by the best French house act of all time. One of the first songs of theirs I heard is a track from Discovery (the same album that “One More Time” appears on) called “Harder Better Faster Stronger.” I love it dearly.
For over a decade, I’ve had an app called iDaft on my phone. This allows me to try to recreate several Daft Punk songs (including this one) using a soundboard. It’s terrific fun, and I’m going to fire it up for a bit after dancing it all out to the full song:
MORE FOR YOU
Anyway, before we start, I want to mention the great community we have on Discord, where we chat about Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re welcome to hang out with us.
Discord is also the best way to give me feedback about the column. I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my newsletter, Pastimes.
Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Monday, September 29 are coming right up.
How To Play NYT Connections
Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.
Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.
There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.
As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.
Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

Today’s NYT Connections Answers
Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.
This is your last chance to look away.
This is your final warning!
Today’s Connections answers are…
🟨 Yellow group — kinds of underwear (BOXER, BRIEF, HIPSTER, THONG)
🟩 Green group — play a joke on (FOOL, PRANK, PUNK, TRICK)
🟦 Blue group — parts of a toilet tank (CHAIN, FLAPPER, FLOAT, HANDLE)
🟪 Purple group — first words in ’70s rock song title (BABA, BOHEMIAN, HOTEL, STAIRWAY)
One of the easiest purple groups I’ve seen to date, thanks to “BOHEMIAN Rhapsody,” “STAIRWAY to Heaven” and “BABA O’Riley.” It only took me a moment to realize that “HOTEL California” and not “The CHAIN” was the fourth word.
The greens were up next after I realized PUNK was the fourth word I needed. After that, the yellows became clear. I got the blues by default, but I sent those through second-last, just because I can.
Might be a trickier game than usual for those who aren’t attuned to ’70s rock or don’t know their fill valve from their overflow tube. Still, my streak now sits at 213 wins, and I’ll take that. Here’s my grid for today:
That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Tuesday’s game if you need them.
P.S. I have to go with a ‘70s rock song as today’s recommendation, don’t I? I’ve used “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Baba O’Riley” in the past, and I’m not an enormous fan of “Stairway to Heaven” or “Hotel California.” So I won’t go with any of those that are referenced in today’s purple group.
Instead, I’ll go with one of the songs I used in the hint (the others are “Sweet Home Alabama” and “American Pie”).
I saw Bruce Springsteen live for the third time on Halloween last year. He and the E Street Bad were just terrific. They always are. They played “Born to Run” that night, because of course they did:
Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
