NYPD detective, 40, who is mother-of-three dies after undergoing ultra-dangerous cosmetic procedure in Colombia

An NYPD detective and mother of three has died after undergoing risky cosmetic procedures in Colombia. Detective Alicia Stone, 40, went to Cali for a liposuction and gluteal fat transer, commonly known as a butt lift. She had the procedures done on October 16, and she died just a week later. After undergoing the surgeries, Stone was sent to a hotel to recover. The detective was found unresponsive in her room around 6.30am on Thursday, October 23, according to law enforcement sources. She was rushed to the city's Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital where she was pronounced dead around 7.50am, a little less than an hour after she was found, according to sources who also said she had suffered 'unspecified cardiac arrest.' Police sources said Stone was taking anticoagulants and pain medication as part of her post-surgery recovery plan. Stone was a detective who had served with the NYPD for 13 years and worked at the department's Internal Affairs Bureau. Her husband, Michael Stone, was left confused and outraged by her sudden death. He told the Daily News that the doctor shared no information or details about how or why his wife died when he received the call informing him of her passing around 11am that day. He said the doctor told him 'I'm so sorry. Your wife had some medical episode and they tried to save her,' and that the doctor 'said it might have been a heart attack or blood clot. She didn't know anything.' 'Something just doesn't add up,' her husband said. He described his wife as 'beautiful' and an officer with the 'highest of integrity.' Stone's husband said she was a 'perfectionist,' and he lauded her quick rise through the NYPD's ranks, where he said she went from an officer, to internal affairs, to a second degree detective. The grieving husband said Stone was doing well before the procedure and that she also seemed fine when family members spoke with her the day before she died. Michael said he was shocked and hurt after learning she died. 'I don't have the facts and that's what I need, the facts of what happened,' he said. Authorities have contacted the Colombian National Police, the State Department and a consular services officials said. Stone's husband said the NYPD also sent a detective to Colombia to look into his wife's death. The NYPD confirmed to the Daily Mail that Stone died on October 23 but did not respond to an inquiry asking whether the department sent a detective to Colombia. Michael also said he plans to request an autopsy when his wife's body returns to the US, and he asked for every record he could get about her death. 'I have no trust at this point in anything that has occurred in Colombia,' he said. A fundraising campaign organized by Stone's family meant to 'help ease the burden of various expenses,' described the late detective as 'a devoted wife, loving mother of three, and a dedicated public servant.' The fundraiser also emphasized the impact of Stone's death on her three children, 'who now face an unimaginable loss.' As of October 27, the campaign has raised $15,550 dollars out of its $50,000 goal. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a gluteal fat transfer involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to increase its size. Complications from the procedure such as fat embolus, resulting in death, are uncommon but can occur from injecting fat intramuscularly, experts said. A 2017 report in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that internationally, one in every 3,448 butt enhancement surgery patients die from the procedure. For some perspective, that is almost 15 times higher than the overall death rate from cosmetic procedures in the US, which is around one in 55,000.
