STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A new high school that would provide more than 800 seats for students has been proposed for Staten Island.
A new facility serving students in ninth through 12th grade would bring approximately 801 seats to St. George, with spots allocated for special education students in District 75, according to documents from the New York City School Construction Authority.
The approximately 46,096-square-foot proposed site would be located at 25 Wall St., on the north side of Wall Street, between Academy Place and Stuyvesant Place. The site is currently occupied by a paved parking lot.
The proposed site would be acquired by the SCA, on behalf of the city Department of Education.
According to the proposal, the school would open to students by 2030.
The new building would be located just a few blocks away from nearby Curtis High School and Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School, both located in St. George.
Currently, only a notice of filing is available for the proposed school site.
The proposed school comes as the city works to add more school seats to meet class size requirements per state law and meet demand as enrollment grows on Staten Island.
Staten Island currently has 14 high schools.
By 2030, Staten Island’s District 31, which encompasses all general education public schools in the borough, is projected to have 19,003 high school students enrolled in ninth through 12th grade. This is a potential increase of up to 494 students, compared to current enrollment numbers on Staten Island. With the proposed school building, utilization rates of high schools in the borough will remain under 100%.
Comments on the proposed action are to be submitted to the School Construction Authority by email to sites@nycsca.org, or at the address: Kelly Murphy, Senior Director of Real Estate Services, New York City School Construction Authority, 25-01 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101.
Comments will be accepted until Nov. 19.
