NYC Mayoral Election: Meet The Key Contenders In New York City's High-Stakes Race

New Yorkers head to the polls on Tuesday to choose the city’s next mayor, facing a sharp choice between a young socialist, a former governor with a tarnished reputation, and a Republican outsider. The outcome is being closely watched nationally, including by US President Donald Trump, who has already voiced his criticism of one candidate. Zohran Mamdani: The surprise favourite At just 34, Zohran Mamdani shot to prominence after winning the Democratic primary in June, making him a strong contender for the mayoralty. Born in Uganda to Indian parents, he moved to the United States at age seven and became a citizen in 2018. Mamdani, a self-declared democratic socialist, would become New York’s first Muslim mayor if elected. His campaign has resonated with young voters and immigrant communities, focusing on the city’s rising living costs. Promises include expanded rent control, free day care, city-run grocery stores, and free public buses. Mamdani has faced attacks from Trump, who labelled him a “little communist,” but the assemblyman has largely dismissed such comments. He is known for supporting Palestinian rights while also speaking out against antisemitism. Before politics, Mamdani briefly performed as a rapper under the name “Young Cardamom.” Andrew Cuomo: The experienced candidate The 67-year-old Andrew Cuomo, former governor of New York state, is attempting a political comeback after resigning in 2021 over sexual harassment allegations. Running as an independent, he has campaigned on a centrist platform, drawing on decades of experience in politics, including service as New York attorney general and a role in President Bill Clinton’s administration. Cuomo’s proposals focus on public safety, promising 5,000 new police officers, and housing, including new units for different income levels. He also plans to reduce classroom sizes and improve access to healthcare. While his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic was initially praised, he faced criticism for underreporting deaths in state nursing homes. Cuomo was once married to Kerry Kennedy of the well-known US political family. Curtis Sliwa: The Republican outsider At 71, Curtis Sliwa faces an uphill battle in a predominantly Democratic city. The founder of the Guardian Angels subway patrol group, Sliwa is known for his red beret and street-level activism. He previously ran for mayor in 2021 but lost to incumbent Eric Adams, who is not seeking re-election. Although a Republican, Sliwa has distanced himself from Trump and opposed parts of the president’s immigration policies. His campaign this year has focused on improving public safety, reducing bureaucracy, addressing the cost of living, supporting the homeless, and even animal welfare. Sliwa reportedly lives with 16 cats, highlighting his unique personal profile. (With inputs from AFP)
