STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Sunday, Nov. 2, tens of thousands of runners will depart from Staten Island as part of the annual TCS New York City Marathon. During the race, runners will travel 26.2 miles around New York City, covering all five boroughs. The event kicks off, as always, on Staten Island, where runners journey from Fort Wadsworth and cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge toward Brooklyn. Participants will then run through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx as part of the course before finishing in Central Park. To accommodate the waves of runners during the marathon’s start, MTA Bridges and Tunnels will close the lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to all non-emergency vehicular traffic between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Additionally, the upper level of the span will close in both directions beginning at 11 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, to allow for roadway preparation. According to the MTA, the Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue exits of the Staten Island Expressway will close at 3 a.m. on Sunday and reopen at approximately 4 p.m. In addition, various Staten Island streets may be closed on Sunday at the discretion of the NYPD. The marathon begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, but groups of runners will continue to start in waves up until 11:30 a.m.
