NYC Emergency Management issues weather alert ahead of storm

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A weather alert has been issued by the New York City Emergency Management Department in anticipation of a storm forecast to impact the city on Thursday. In coordination with the National Weather Service, the department is monitoring a low-pressure system set to deliver heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the five boroughs. As of Wednesday afternoon, the department shared that they believe the heaviest rain will fall from Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening. Rainfall rates could even reach one inch per hour for a brief period of time, according to the department. By Friday morning, the rain should steer clear of the city. Ultimately, the five boroughs can expect a rainfall tally between one and two inches. As the rain increases in strength, so too will wind speeds. By Thursday evening, sustained speeds are forecast to reach 20-30 mph; gusts can reach up to 40 mph, the department said. Winds will grow even stronger on Friday, when gusts could exceed upwards of 40 mph, potentially even reaching 50 mph. “New Yorkers know how to handle tough weather, and we will get through Thursday’s storm the same way we always do: together and prepared,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “Our teams across the city are ready to respond, and we are asking New Yorkers to take a few simple steps to stay safe and comfortable. Give yourself extra time to get around, secure anything outdoors that could blow over, and keep an eye on the forecast. Sign up for Notify NYC so you have the latest information at your fingertips. We want everyone to enjoy a safe and smooth lead-up to Halloween.” Given the forecast for heavy rain, localized minor nuisance flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas remains a possibility. Moreover, there is a risk for minor coastal flooding around high tide in vulnerable areas along city shorelines. “New York City is bracing for heavy rainfall and high winds just before Halloween,” said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol. “NYC Emergency Management has activated the City’s Flash Flood Emergency Plan, and we are closely coordinating with the National Weather Service and our partner agencies in response to the expected weather conditions. We urge New Yorkers to prepare for potential impacts, especially if you plan to participate in early voting. Please allow for extra travel time and consider using public transportation.
