NWS: Heavy rains result in minor flooding

Widespread showers were expected to last until Tuesday evening and taper by Wednesday, giving way to a relatively drier end of the week, the National Weather Service said.

Some of the showers were heavy, resulting in some runoff and minor urban flooding on Tuesday, NWS Weather Forecast Office Guam said in its weekly weather outlook.

A surface trough near the Marianas is generating these showers, thunderstorms and locally heavy rain across Guam and Rota, NWS added.

This trough, attached to a disturbance west of Guam, Invest 90W, will pull westward in the coming days.

Combined seas will hold at around 3 to 4 feet, with a low risk of rip currents along all reefs and beaches.

A broad, weak circulation is centered west of Guam and north of Yap. A ridge of fair weather and lighter winds extends across Palau, with fair weather up to near Yap Proper.

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, which encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies and disasters, a campaign that gained momentum following the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” underscores the importance of focusing on the essentials of preparedness; after all, “you are the help until help arrives.”

Four key actions that can be taken today:

Know your risk.Make a family emergency plan.Build an emergency supply kit.Get involved in your community by taking action to prepare for emergencies.

To learn more about emergency preparedness, join the NWS Guam, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, and other community partners at the National Preparedness Month Outreach Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Agana Shopping Center.
