NRSA, Municipal Assemblies begin removal of illegal billboards from Darkuman to Mallam Junction

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), in collaboration with municipal assemblies, has commenced the removal of unauthorized billboards mounted along road medians between Hansonic Junction in Darkuman and Mallam Junction. The exercise, which began on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, follows months of warnings to advertising companies after repeated reports linked such structures to road traffic casualties.

Billboards advertising church services, medical facilities, and entertainment events were among those taken down. While some advertising firms, clients, and sign owners voluntarily removed their structures, others requested more time, with a few outrightly refusing to comply.

Acting Director-General of the NRSA, Esq. Abraham Amaliba, explained that the exercise is part of a broader strategy to improve road safety.

“This is a continuous exercise. In fact, we’ve cleared other locations and will continue because these billboards obstruct the vision of both drivers and pedestrians. Accident rates and fatalities are on the rise, and as a safety authority, our mandate is to ensure roads are safe for everyone. These signs pose visual and cognitive distractions, which we must address,” he said.

Mr. Amaliba called for cooperation from all stakeholders to avert further risks and ensure safer roads.

Maintenance Engineer for Ablekuma Municipal Urban Roads, Kweku Tsegah, , emphasized that proper procedures exist for erecting billboards.

“We don’t put billboards in the medians. They are supposed to be behind the walkway, at a safe distance. That way, even in case of storms or strong winds, they don’t endanger road users. Anyone who wants to erect a billboard must apply to the assembly. A team inspects the site, and if approved, a permit is granted. Unfortunately, some people bypass the process and mount signs illegally, and those are the ones we remove,” he said.

The NRSA says the enforcement exercise will continue in other parts of Accra as part of its mandate to reduce accidents and fatalities on Ghana’s roads.
