The youth wing of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to embark on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at what they described as state-sponsored harassment and abuse of power
In a notice issued by the national organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, the protest will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in Accra.
NPP supporters and sympathisers are expected to converge at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, at 6:00 am on September 23, marching through some principal streets of Ghana’s capital city.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong; the Acting Chairman, Joseph Danquah Smith; other national executives, as well as the minority caucus in Parliament led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, are expected to join the protest.
According to Nana B, the march is in protest of the weaponisation of state institutions against members of the NPP by the John Mahama-led administration.
“This march is a stand against the weaponisation of state institutions targeting NPP members and voices against the government. We are calling on all members and sympathisers to join in solidarity against injustices and abuse of power.”
The NPP youth wing, led by Salam Mustapha, is taking this action on the backdrop of the arrest and continued detention of the party’s Bono regional minister, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
Before Abronye DC’s arrest, the Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, as well as some social media activists of the party, were arrested and granted bail.
Abronye DC’s arrest
On Monday, September 8, 2025, armed police personnel arrested Abronye DC in Accra.
A statement released by the Ghana Police Service stated that he was arrested for “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace”.
The NPP Bono regional chairman was consequently arraigned before Accra Circuit Court 9 on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, where the judge remanded him in custody and ordered him to return on Friday, 12 September 2025.
Upon his return on September 12, however, the presiding judge denied him bail for the second time, remanding him in police custody for another week.
Abronye DC is expected to make his third appearance in court next week, between September 18 and 19, 2025.

Mixed reactions to NPP’s plan protest
The protest announced by the NPP sparked mixed reactions among some Ghanaians on social media.

Abronye DC declares a hunger strike
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Abronye DC reportedly declared a hunger strike in protest of his continued detention.
This was after the Accra Court denied him bail for the second time following his arrest on September 8, 2025.
According to his lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, Abronye DC embarked on the hunger strike because he believed his arrest and detention was politically motivated persecution.
