The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will go ahead with its planned demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, despite the release of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
Abronye DC was granted bail and released on Monday, September 15, on health grounds, after being remanded for a week on charges of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.
Reacting to the development on Eyewitness News, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, said the demonstration is not about Abronye’s detention alone but about what the NPP describes as persistent harassment of its members by the police and the government.
“We’re protesting against the government’s continued action for over seven to eight months. We’re demonstrating against the principles and conduct, not necessarily the capture of Abronye DC. We are protesting against the abuse of power, police/national security harassment and intolerance of the NDC government,” he told host Umaru Sanda Amadu.
According to him, the release of Abronye does not change the NPP’s position.
“This does not cure the problem, and we will not put a stop to the demonstration. The demonstration will go unabated on September 23. Subsequent to that, other protests will follow. We have noticed that it is quite an intentional action being taken by the government, and we’re going to be intentional about our response to the same,” he added.
Mr. Mustapha confirmed that the police have been formally notified of the party’s planned protest.
Abronye DC, on September 12, was ordered to remain in police custody for one week to allow prosecutors more time for investigations.
Abronye was first arrested on Monday, September 8, over what police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.”
