Lawyers for Ghana’s former Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid have dismissed claims linking him to assets published by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in connection with an ongoing corruption case. In a statement issued on Thursday (6 November), the law firm HAY & Partners at Law insisted that none of the properties listed by the OSP “can, by any stretch of evidence or logic, be traced to or associated with” Dr. Abdul-Hamid, who is one of ten individuals cited in the case The Republic v. Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid & 9 Others. Trial by publicity The lawyers accused the OSP of engaging in “trial by publicity,” alleging that recent social media posts were “deliberately crafted to create public confusion and unjustly associate” their client with assets he does not own. They further challenged the OSP to disclose the “true owners” of the assets and to desist from what they described as “publicity stunts and speculative storytelling.” “Our client will not be the scapegoat of such theatrics,” the statement added, warning that the legal team would respond “appropriately, both in the court of law and the court of public opinion” if the matter persists. Useless matter Speaking to some media persons at the High Court in Accra on 4 November Abdul-Hamid said that he was at the court to support his friend, “Chairman Wontumi,” who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He downplayed the corruption case filed against him and nine others by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing it as “useless.” “I came to support my friend Wontumi. Me, my matter is useless. There is nothing in it,” he said before proceeding to enter his vehicle. The OSP filed 54 criminal charges against top former and current officials of the NPA and several associated business entities for alleged large-scale extortion, abuse of public office, and money laundering. The case involves allegations of financial malfeasance totalling over GHC291.5 million and US$332,407.47. appropriately, both in the court of law and the court of public opinion” if the matter persists.
