Novant Health Inc. has received conditional approval from state health regulators to transfer two operating rooms to its Clemmons and Kernersville hospitals.
The Novant operating rooms are being moved from the Hawthorne Outpatient Surgery facility.
According to the certificate-of-need applications to the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation, the projected cost is $41 million for shifting the two operating rooms to Clemmons Medical Center.
By comparison, the price tag for the Kernersville Medical Center project is estimated at $24.1 million.
The Clemmons facility currently has five operating rooms and Kernersville facility four.
The Clemmons and Kernersville hospitals have had modest patient use since opening, with some of their traffic being driven by their respective systems shifting some outpatient surgical procedures there.
The Novant Health Inc. quarterly reports for bondholders list service data for each of its N.C. community hospitals, which provides insight into the frequency of use for each facility.
For fiscal 2024, Kernersville Medical Center had an average daily inpatient count of 49, while Clemmons Medical Center was at 14.
Comparing Novant hospitals of similar size, the average daily inpatient count was 60 in Thomasville, 52 in Brunswick, 112 in Huntersville, 122 in Matthews, 23 in Mint Hill, 20 in the Charlotte suburb of Ballantyne, 45 in East Cooper (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), 25 in Coastal Medical Center (Hardeeville, S.C.) and 51 in Hilton Head, S.C.
