A British travel vlogger’s unsettling experience at an ATM in Amritsar, India, has triggered a conversation on social media. Alex Wanders, who documents his travel experiences online, claimed to have been followed and watched closely by two suspicious men while attempting a cash withdrawal. Capturing the entire experience on camera, the vlogger shows the moment two local men stood extremely close to him while he was using the ATM.
“I was trying to use the ATM in Amritsar, India, when two men followed me in. One stands immediately over my right shoulder, looking over at what I was entering into the machine, whilst the other one watched closely from the left,” Alex wrote in the caption.
Despite confronting the two and asking for space, one of them continued to observe his actions by standing extremely close to him. Alex expressed concern over the possibility of a scam, sharing that the entire incident was very uncomfortable for him.

What Did The Social Media Users Say?
The Instagram post triggered a flurry of comments, with users divided over the seriousness of the incident. While some sympathised with Alex and warned him to stay cautious, others felt the situation was either exaggerated or misunderstood.
“Gosh, this is stressful!!” read a comment.
Another questioned the authenticity of the moment, “Looks pretty staged to me…”
“Next time, do the polite thing and let them go first,” suggested a user.
An individual stated, “Don’t stress. This is common. Yes, you need to take care, but I’m sure these guys have no bad intentions.”
“It’s not just you – I have had a similar experience. I stopped what I was doing, stepped away, and asked the guys to carry on, went outside, and told the security,” another shared a similar experience.
A user remarked, “It looks like he doesn’t know English, but he wanted to help. Maybe you were taking too long, and you are a foreigner, so he thought he should help you. You can trust a guy with a turban; it is safe.”
What Does Alex Think?
At the end, Alex said that the ATMs in India provide money, and then the card is released afterwards. Many foreign tourists, unfamiliar with the machine sequence, leave their cards in the machines. He speculated that the men may have been trying to watch him enter his PIN, hoping that he would forget his card inside the ATM.
Whether it was a scam attempt or a misunderstanding, staying alert is the best precaution for every traveller.
