Norwegian Man’s Indian Birthday Meal Post Draws Racist Comments: ‘I Don’t See Any Cow Dung’

A man from Norway recently shared a simple post celebrating his birthday with Indian food. What should have been a cheerful moment, however, quickly turned sour. His photo, showing a plate of chole chawal with naan, unexpectedly drew hateful and racist comments targeting India and its cuisine. The man had written, “Indian food for my birthday,” along with the photo of his meal. Soon after, the comments section was flooded with offensive remarks mocking Indian food and culture. Many people praised the man for trying Indian food and wished him well, with some even recommending other dishes he could taste next time. But amid the positivity, a section of users began posting racist and hateful comments. Some made offensive jokes about cow dung, while others mocked the way the food looked. A person wrote, “That’s Indian food? I don’t see any cow poop.” Another commented, “Why does it look like poop? People actually choose to eat this?” Others questioned why anyone would eat Indian food at all. However, not all comments were negative. Many users stood by the Norwegian man and engaged warmly with him. A user asked, “How do you like it?” to which he replied, “It’s great.” Another user suggested, “Add some raita (yoghurt with veggies) next time… helps with taste and digestion.” Some encouraged him to explore more dishes. “Rajma Chawal is a top-level selection,” one user said, while another wrote, “Indian food with Pepsi is the GOAT. You have great taste, my friend.” A few even debated his choice, with one user commenting, “Why did you go for Indian food? You should definitely have opted for Chinese food to celebrate your birthday.” Study Finds Rise in Anti-India Hate Online The incident has reignited discussions around the rise of hate speech on social media. According to a report by the Centre for the Study of Organised Hate (CSOH) in Washington, D.C., there has been a significant increase in anti-India content on the X platform. “These attacks are not exclusively aimed at Hindus, whether of Indian or American origin. Rather, they are directed at everyone perceived to be of Indian origin, which, as our analysis reveals, also includes members of the Sikh community,” the report said.
