A data center hub in Northern Virginia is causing havoc across the world after it experienced a significant outage this morning, and the economic impact could be significant. The issue began at approximately 3:11 a.m. and disrupted the start of the work week for many companies. Amazon Web Services’ cloud computing service is recovering from the outage that affected many government, university, gaming and business websites, as well as some apps. It was also responsible for some flight delays. “Service recovery across all AWS services continues to improve,” AWS said in its latest update on its health status page. “We continue to reduce throttles for new EC2 Instance launches in the US-EAST-1 Region that were put in place to help mitigate impact.” The root cause seems to be linked to its network load balancers, AWS said. Worldwide, there were more than 11 million reports of operational issues today; 3 million in the U.S. alone meaning productivity at many companies has been impacted. According to Downdetector, errors were reported on Amazon, Lyft, Instagram, Google, Fortnite, Snapchat, Roblox, Ring, Coinbase, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Venmo, Fanduel, Reddit, Instacart, Zoom, Door Dash, Netflix, YouTube, Roku and Adobe. While AWS reported it had “fully mitigated” the outage, customers are still reporting issues this afternoon. Engineers are actively working on the problem, and most services have been restored. However, recovery is taking longer for some businesses, AWS wrote. Daoudi said today’s outage could have a financial impact of billions of dollars. “The financial impact of this outage will easily reach into the hundreds of billions due to loss in productivity for millions of workers that cannot do their job, plus business operations that are stopped or delayed — from airlines to factories.” AWS pledged to invest $35 billion to establish data center campuses across Virginia by 2040.
