NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Some community members say they left feeling unsatisfied after a North Charleston Police Department Town Hall on Tuesday. Community members claim more needs to be done despite recent efforts by the North Charleston Police Department. Local community members touched on a range of issues that they believe are causing problems in North Charleston. They claim housing, healthcare and education are root issues that need to be addressed before police relations can improve in the area. Their biggest demand was wanting community control over police policies and budget decisions. Advocates feel there is a lack of accountability from the department and want a seat at the table to better all residents of North Charleston. “We don’t want things to continue in the same way that they’ve been continuing because, you know, that’s not what’s going to fix the issue. That’s not going to improve the material conditions of our people,” Lowcountry Action Committee Co-Founder Erica Veal said. North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho responded with a statement following the community gathering: “We are in the process of setting up a meeting between representatives of Lowcountry Action Committee, Chief Camacho, and Mayor Burgess. The purpose of this meeting is to engage in an open and constructive discussion regarding their concerns and to work collaboratively toward shared understanding and solutions. We value transparency, dialogue, and partnership, and we look forward to a productive conversation that strengthens our community relationships.”
