COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY Norfolk State men win 6th MEAC title in row The Norfolk State men’s cross country team continued its dominance Saturday in Cary, North Carolina, winning its sixth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship. NSU posted finishes of 1-3-10-14-27 for 55 points. Delaware State placed second with 70, while North Carolina Central was third with 91. NSU’s Lewis Too claimed the individual title with an 8-kilometer time of 24 minutes, 20.60 seconds. Mathew Kipkoech (third in 24:44.40), Jemmel Green (10th, 25:36.40) and Basil Koech (14th in 25:53.70) joined Too in gaining All-MEAC accolades. The Spartans’ Kenneth Giles, as he has been so often, was named the men’s Outstanding Coach. Earlier, NSU’s women placed second with 54 points, trailing only Howard (34). N.C. Central was third with 71. Sonia Koech (third in 18:58.70), Abigael Chebet (fourth in 18:45.80), Jahmei Wyatt (seventh in 18:58.70) and Amira Dailey (13th in 19:20.40) took All-MEAC honors for NSU. CNU women second, men third at C2C championships Christopher Newport traveled to California for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference championship meet in Sunnyvale, where the Captains’ women placed second and the men third. UC Santa Cruz won the team titles for the fifth straight year. The Banana Slugs’ women accumulated 26 points to CNU’s 53 in the 6-kilometer race, and the UC Santa Cruz men had 23 points to CNU’s 70 in the men’s 8K. Six Captains earned All-C2C honors, led by Evan Young’s third-place finish in a personal-record 24 minutes, 52.6 seconds. Sarah Dake paced the CNU women by taking sixth in 22:05.1. Both Regent teams, in their first year competing, placed sixth. COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER Bridgewater ousts Virginia Wesleyan Erick Lobo’s goal in the 79th minute gave fourth-seeded Bridgewater a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC quarterfinal. The Eagles outshot the Marlins 11-7. Bridgewater (12-4-2) avenged a 3-2 home loss Oct. 22 to VWU (12-5-1). Christopher Newport (10-2-5), ranked 22nd in Division III, played to a 3-3 draw at Salisbury (7-5-5). Caleb Jones, Joe Summerfield and Yazan Yaghmmour scored for the Captains. Gavin Miller’s goal in the 83rd minute for the Sea Gulls forced the draw. ODU scores late to tie JMU Lewis Rourke scored in the 87th minute as Old Dominion (5-5-6, 1-3-4 Sun Belt) rallied for a 1-1 tie at James Madison (1-10-4, 0-6-2). Jamie Wynne’s high-arching cross careened off a JMU defender before Micah Wayland tapped the ball to Rourke for the goal. ODU, in seventh place as it tries to be among the eight teams that make the conference tournament out of 10, closes its regular season at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday against 18th-ranked Kentucky, which leads the conference. W&M ends year with loss at Elon William & Mary’s season ended Saturday night with a 1-0 loss to Elon. The Tribe (2-10-4, 1-6-1) did not qualify for the Coastal Athletic Association’s six-team tournament field, falling eight points behind UNC Wilmington, the South Division’s third-place team. Jordin Wilson scored for the Phoenix (7-3-6, 4-1-3) in the 72nd minute, though W&M’s Karan Sobti made two saves. Elon and Hofstra earned the event’s two No. 1 seeds. COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER ODU’s Kulha repeats Sun Belt defensive honor Old Dominion junior defender Ashlynn Kulha was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was among six Monarchs to be cited with all-conference awards. Kulha made the all-conference first team, while ODU midfielder Gry Boe Thrysoe made the second team. Four Monarchs made the third team: junior goalkeeper Ellie Goodrich, senior midfielder Yuliia Khrystiuk, freshman forward Ashley Economopoulos and senior midfielder Andrea Balcazar Algarin. James Madison sophomore Ginny Lackey repeated as the Offensive Player of the Year. JMU midfielder Jeanette Fieldsend and defender Jordan Yang made the second team. The second-seeded Monarchs face seventh-seeded Georgia State in a quarterfinal at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Monday in Foley, Alabama. VWU reaches ODAC semifinals Second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan (14-3-2) captured a 1-0 home overtime victory over No. 7 Lynchburg in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal. The Marlins advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal at home against the winner of No. 6 Roanoke at No. 3 Shenandoah. In the 99th minute, Courtney Mills converted off a Kaylyn Seitz assist. Allie Greco made five saves for her ninth shutout of the year. COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL CNU spikes No. 24 W&L Simara Alexander had 15 kills, Grassfield High graduate Maddie Hanes had 20 digs and Fielding Croft had 43 assists to help Christopher Newport (19-7) upended No. 24 Washington and Lee 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) at Freeman Center. W&L fell to 20-6. UNC Wilmington (4-18, 3-9 Coastal Athletic Association) gained a two-match split against visiting William & Mary (9-14, 4-8), beating the Tribe 3-1 Saturday to end W&M’s three-match winning streak. Audrey Brcka led W&M with 13 kills, Beatriz Silva had 28 assists and a career-high 19 digs, and Nicole Smith had 12 kills and 10 digs. Marshall sweeps ODU Marshall (14-11, 6-6 Sun Belt) finished a two-match sweep against Old Dominion, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-14) in Huntington, West Virginia. For the Monarchs (5-18, 2-10), Emma Schelah had 12 kills, Elisa Maggi had eight kills, Kate Kilpatrick had 17 digs, and Wiktoria Zagumny had 31 assists. Northeastern downs Hampton Northeastern (8-12, 4-7 Coastal Athletic Association) handled Hampton 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21) in the first of two matches in Boston. Racquel Frazier’s eight kills and Katerina Pappa’s six paced the Pirates (1-22, 0-13). NSU’s Gilbert reaches 1,000 kills in defeat Norfolk State’s Gabrielle Gilbert surpassed 1,000 career kills, though the Spartans lost 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 18-25, 25-7, 15-5) to visiting Maryland Eastern Shore. Gilbert, who had 16 kills Friday for the Spartans (2-21, 1-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), stands tied for second in program history with Jessica Johnson (2012–14, ’16) at 1,002 kills. UMES improved to 9-14, 6-4. Regent sets record with 16th victory Regent (16-8) set a single-season school record with its 15th and 16th victories Saturday, beating Trinity Washington and Mid-Atlantic Christian by 3-0 scores in Washington. Rylee Stewart had 16 assists, seven aces and five digs in a 25-10, 25-11, 25-6 win over Trinity Washington. Against MACU, Eliana Winn had eight kills in a 25-5, 25-18, 25-8 victory. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY W&M finishes year with victory William & Mary closed its season with a 3-2 nonconference triumph over La Salle in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Junior Anya Green scored her first two college goals in the first half, and Natasha Browning provided the game-winner in the third quarter for the Tribe (2-15) against the Explorers (7-11). No. 4 Cavaliers take share of ACC title No. 4 Virginia (14-1, 7-1) took a four-goal lead and took a share of the ACC regular-season championship with a 5-3 victory in Charlottesville over No. 6 Wake Forest (15-3, 7-1). The Cavaliers, Demon Deacons and North Carolina shared the title with identical conference records. COLLEGE SWIMMING W&M women go 1-1 in weekend meet The William and Mary women defeated Queens of North Carolina but lost to UNC Wilmington in a meet Saturday in the Seahawks’ aquatic center. The Tribe women won 137.5-123.5 against the Royals but lost 149-144 to UNCW. The W&M men lost to both teams, falling 205-82 to Queens and 213-80 to the Seahawks. Julie Addison set Tribe dual-meet individual records in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, 54.15 and 1:59.72. She teamed with Lindsay Juhlin, Lauren Klinefelter, and Caroline Burgeson for a 200 medley relay record of 1:39.25. On the men’s side, Aiden Bond clocked in at 1:37.47 to place third in the 200 free, earning W&M another dual record. COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS W&M thrives in home tourney William & Mary went 12-0 in doubles and 16-3 in singles during its hidden-dual tournament against VCU, Norfolk State and Morgan State. Junior Francesca Davis and freshman Tilda Larsson were 3-0 in doubles for the weekend to improve to 10-1 on the year. COLLEGE ROWING ODU takes first in race at Head of Occoquan The Old Dominion women competed in nine events at the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday afternoon in Fairfax. The Monarchs’ second varsity eight-plus won by eight seconds over runner-up Georgetown by eight seconds en route to ODU taking home five medals in its first race of the season. ODU’s time was 18 minutes, 6.8 seconds. PRO TENNIS UVA’s Jódar wins pro tourney in Charlottesville Virginia sophomore Rafael Jódar won the singles title at the Jonathan Fried Charlottesville ATP Pro Challenger at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Playing in front of a packed house filled with Cavalier tennis fans and his UVA teammates, Jódar topped No. 191 Martin Damm 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the final to win his third ATP Challenger title of the year. Jódar started the week at No. 207 in the ATP world rankings. He will move into the top 200 Monday.
