Nokia CEO says AI boom mirrors 1990s internet revolution

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard believes the world is entering an “AI supercycle” similar to the internet boom of the 1990s, dismissing growing fears of an artificial intelligence bubble. He emphasized that despite short-term market fluctuations, the long-term outlook for AI-driven growth remains exceptionally strong. Hotard’s statement comes as global investors debate whether the massive surge in AI spending can be sustained without economic fallout. Hotard, who previously led Intel’s data centre and AI group before joining Nokia in April, highlighted that demand for AI-related infrastructure continues to rise rapidly. He stated that Nokia is witnessing growth “across the board,” from major tech companies to smaller enterprises across Europe. As organizations rush to expand their data capabilities, the need for advanced networks and cloud systems has fueled a wave of investment, particularly in data centres. He added that Nokia is benefiting directly from the AI surge, with recent quarterly earnings exceeding expectations due to strong optical and cloud demand. Nokia’s strategic shift toward AI marks its most significant transformation since it sold its mobile phone division in 2013. While mobile networks remain a core part of its operations, the company is now integrating AI into key areas like radio access and fibre networks. The acquisition of Infinera, a leading U.S. optical networking firm, has also strengthened Nokia’s position in AI-driven data centre technology. With this move, the Finnish telecom giant aims to enhance its competitiveness in a rapidly evolving tech landscape. As AI continues to reshape industries, Nokia’s renewed focus on intelligent infrastructure signals a bold step into the next phase of global digital transformation.
