EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace is not anticipated to see layoffs as the federal government shutdown continues, according to a statement from U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s office.
The government shut down Oct. 1 after President Donald Trump and Congress failed to reach an agreement to keep government programs and services running by the deadline.
Trump wants to preserve existing spending levels and is threatening to permanently fire federal workers if the government remains closed. His administration sees the shutdown as an opening to wield greater power over the budget, with multiple officials saying they will save money as workers are furloughed by imposing permanent job cuts on thousands of government workers, a tactic that has never been used before.
Democrats, meanwhile, are demanding an extension of health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act for their votes to reopen the government.
As for the FAA, “It still stands that 2/3rds are furloughed and one third remain working with all receiving backpay. Any anticipated layoffs would target the bureaucracy at the DOT in Washington, not the South Jersey tech center,” according to a statement from Van Drew’s office.
Last week, Van Drew introduced legislation that would allow for Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration employees to get paid during the shutdown. Both bills have been referred to the House Appropriations Committee.
