Motorists across Malawi are stranded as long fuel queues worsen nationwide, with some spending nights at filling stations hoping for a few litres. The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has attributed the crisis to post-election unrest in Tanzania, Malawi’s main fuel supply route, saying the disruption has slowed delivery trucks heading to Malawi. In Blantyre, it’s a long night for residents trying to get home. Heavy traffic has clogged major routes, especially along the Blantyre–Chikwawa (M1) Road, where vehicles have come to a complete standstill near Nancholi Filling Station. Some motorists have been seen pushing their vehicles, while others sit patiently in long lines with empty tanks. One frustrated motorist, stranded since Monday, said the shortage has crippled his business and daily life. Meanwhile, MERA has dismissed fake social media reports claiming fuel prices have been reduced, urging the public to rely only on official updates. Police officers are currently on the ground helping to manage the situation and keep traffic moving but with supplies still uncertain, the country’s fuel nightmare is far from over.
