Niti Aayog is evaluating some of the indicators under the Global Innovation Index (GII) with an aim to help improve India’s ranking on the global scale. It will soon take up the matter with stakeholder ministries for targeted interventions, a senior government official told ET, requesting anonymity. “While India’s overall ranking has improved many fold since 2015 when it stood at 81st position, it has slipped on some parameters,” the official added. The move was triggered after the ministry of statistics and programme implementation suggested the Aayog look into key indices under the GII to help India scale up its ranking at a faster pace. The Aayog serves as the coordinating body for GII in India.Sources told ET that the statistics ministry has flagged parameters like GDP per unit of energy, domestic industry diversification and females employed with advanced degrees which needs strengthening to improve India’s overall ranking. The ministry had reviewed the methodology and data sources, and shared the findings for necessary action and suggested improvements. Live EventsIndia’s ranking on GDP per unit of energy slipped to 76 in 2025 from 71 in 2023, while on domestic industry diversification it fell to 19 in 2025 from 10 in 2023.Though the country’s ranking improved marginally on the indicator related to females employed with advanced degrees, it remained low at 101 in 2025 when 139 countries were ranked. India’s year-on-year rise on the GII, done by the World Intellectual Property Organization, has been slow, prompting the government to evaluate and propose corrective measures that can help the country register significant improvement.India stood at 48th position in 2020 and improved to 46th in 2021, 40th in 2022 and 2023, 39th in 2024 and 38th in 2025, moving by just one position every year. As per the GII 2025, India has shown improvement in eight indicators but has worsened on two indicators in the short term.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
