Lake County stormwater management lauded
Lake County Surveyor Bill Emerson Jr. and his staff recently were honored by a state organization for the county’s stormwater management program, a release said.
The Indiana Association of Floodplain and Stormwater Management (INAFSM) presented the 2025 Excellence in Stormwater Management Award to Emerson and his staff at its annual meeting in September. The award was established by INAFSM in 1997 to recognize an outstanding stormwater management program or an outstanding stormwater manager.
The award may be bestowed annually upon a local unit of government or an individual, affiliated with the state or a local government, who has consistently demonstrated leadership in the area of stormwater management and has instituted approaches consistent with the INAFSM vision of sound water resources management in Indiana, according to the organization’s website.
Chesterton woman named president of InspereX
InspereX, the tech-driven fixed income and structured investments distribution and trading firm, recently announced Laura Elliott, of Chesterton, has been appointed president, according to a release.
In her new role, Elliott will work to advance the firm’s strategic initiatives, business development and customer experiences, while nurturing and expanding senior relationships with top clients, trading platforms, regulators and key stakeholders, a release said. Previously, she served the firm as head of Capital Markets and co-head of Fixed Income, the release said.
In 1999, Elliott co-founded Incapital alongside Tom Ricketts, Chairman of InspereX and Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, the release said.
Franciscan adds two family practice doctors in Dyer
Franciscan Physician Network is welcoming two family practice doctors to the Dyer Family Health Center, according to a release.
Dr. Jonathan Jones and Dr. Mohammad Wadud are both now part of the Franciscan Physician Network and are accepting new patients.
Jones earned his medical degree from the American University of Antigua in Coolidge, Antigua and his master of public health degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his residency in family medicine at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.. Wadud earned his medical degree from A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona, and completed his residency in family medicine at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in Olympia Fields, Illinois.

Northwest Health – Porter adds to surgery group
Northwest Health welcomes general surgeon Dr. Reuben Rutland to Northwest Medical Group, a release said.
Rutland has expertise in general surgery and trauma surgery and has joined the Northwest Medical Group – General Surgery office at 85 E. U.S. 6, Suite 240, where he joined the hospital’s four additional general surgeons.
Rutland completed his medical education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and his residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut. Call 219-983-6240.
Franciscan Michigan City hosting AFib event
Franciscan Health Michigan City is hosting a free educational event aimed at helping patients and their families better understand atrial fibrillation, a release said.
The event is scheduled to take place from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Maria Theresia Bonzel Conference Room at Franciscan Health Michigan City, 3500 Franciscan Way.
Franciscan Physician Network Interventional Cardiologist Naseer Nasser will share information on common signs and symptoms of AFib, risk factors and the benefits of wearable devices.

Lunch & Learn event planned for Oct. 23
Great Lakes Communications will sponsor a Lunch & Learn event from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Crossroads Chamber of Commerce, according to a release.
The gathering is designed to bring together small business owners, professionals, and community members for networking, education and live entertainment.
The program will include: Networking and mingling, lunch and live music, an interactive learning session and a closing networking opportunity. Judges pick Title IV-D leader
The six Porter County elected judges have selected attorney Karin Brown as Title IV-D Commissioner, a release said.
Brown replaces Commissioner Lisa Moser who served Porter County in that role for almost 13 years, the release said.
The Title IV-D Commissioner is a Porter County judicial officer handling all aspects of Title IV-D cases, including paternity establishment, child support order enforcement and modifications, the release said. In her new role, Brown will conduct hearings as a judicial officer serving at the pleasure of the elected judges, determine child support and calculate arrearages and issue legal orders such as income withholding orders and small claims orders for all of the Porter County Small Claims Courts.
Mrvan announces economic development grant for NIRPC
U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, recently announced a federal grant award for the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission through the U.S. Economic Development Administration, a release said.
NIRPC will receive $70,000 to support the implementation of their Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. According to the EDA, this funding aims to promote this effort to bring together the public and private sectors to strengthen the regional economy and create more job opportunities.
