Nilambur music fest celebrates Malappuram’s cultural heritage

The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy organised a music festival at Nilambur on Saturday night (September 13) in association with Sivaranjini Sangeetha Sabha, Nilambur, and Malappuram Central Kala Samithi.

Inaugurating the festival, Aryadan Shoukath, MLA, extolled the virtues of Malappuram’s cultural landscape. According to him, no other district can rival Malappuram for the role of the State’s cultural centre.

Mr. Shoukath pointed out that Malappuram has been the cradle of numerous literary giants and cultural icons, from Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam, to E.M.S. Namboodiripad, a pioneering socio-political reformer.

“Art and literature foster humanity and unity, transcending religious and caste divides,” said Mr. Shoukath. “Nature is filled with music, rhythm and harmony. Let us celebrate it,” he said. Writer N.P. Vijayakrishnan spoke on ‘music: experience and expression’. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy member Anayadi Prasad welcomed the gathering.

Malappuram District Central Kala Samiti President M.S. Mohanan presided over the function. Sivaranjini Sangeetha Sabha treasurer Vechur C. Shankar proposed a vote of thanks.

A music concert by Arjun B. Krishna followed. Kottayam S. Hariharan accompanied him on violin, Cherthala R. Jayadev on mridangam, Udupi S. Srikanth on kanjira and Haripad S.R. Shekhar on ghadam.
