Nicole Kidman revealed how her late mother held the key to her Keith Urban marriage

‘Love you baby’ Keith Urban sings Happy Birthday to his then wife Nicole in 2018
Nicole Kidman shared a video of Keith Urban along with his fans at a concert in Wisconsin singing her Happy Birthday, back in 2018.
Just four months ago, Nicole Kidman wrote an op-ed noting how “fortunate” she felt to be approaching her 20-year wedding anniversary.
In a May article penned for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian actress credited her late mother Janelle for her enduring marriage with country musician Keith Urban.
“In my father [the late Antony Kidman, who died in 2014], I just saw a man who loved my mother, which was the most beautiful thing to grow up watching. He was so loving to her and devoted to her and was such a good man. They married very young and made it to 50 years, which is a feat,” Kidman wrote in May.
Kidman continued, “I’m very, very fortunate to have created this coming-up-to-20 year marriage. That’s very much because of my parents.”
The Oscar-winner and Urban wouldn’t make the two-decade feat in the end, with news emerging on Tuesday the Hollywood power couple had separated after 19 years of marriage.
Multiple reports, while unconfirmed, have stated Kidman fought to save the marriage. Urban recently moved out of their Nashville home.
It comes almost a year to the day after Kidman lost her beloved “mama” Janelle, who was 84.

At the time, Kidman had landed in Venice, Italy to attend the city’s 81st Film Festival, where she was awarded Best Actress for her performance in the erotic thriller Babygirl.
The film’s director Halina Reijn accepted the award on Kidman’s behalf, before sharing a statement from the actress with the crowd.
“Today, I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after my brave and beautiful mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed,” Kidman wrote.
“I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her.
“She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking. My heart is broken.”

Urban was right by Kidman’s side throughout the heartbreaking ordeal, as the pair flew back to Sydney, Australia to attend the funeral.
However, their public appearances became more and more infrequent as the months unfolded.
Ever since Janelle’s unexpected death, Kidman – famous for her never-ending workload – has taken on less compared to her packed 2024 resume.
After releasing three movies and two TV shows last year, Kidman declared back in March she’d be “off” the promo trail for the rest of the year.

As a result, fans have not seen Kidman engage in much press. In one rare interview aired last December, Kidman fought back tears when asked about life without her mum.
“She knew everything. And that’s probably the biggest loss,” she told CBS’ Sunday Morning.
“You lose the person that knows everything, but loves you anyway,” she added.
Kidman has spent much of 2025 based in Europe, where she was filming Practical Magic 2 in London, while Urban has been embarking on a world music tour.
Their last public appearance together was in June at a World Club Cup group D match at the Geodis Park Stadium in Nashville.
Five days later, Kidman, as she does each year, wished her husband a happy 19-year anniversary on Instagram.
“Happy Anniversary Baby,” she wrote alongside a loved-up photo of the pair.
Urban, however, didn’t share a post in honour of Kidman as he traditionally had.
Further, Urban was noticeably not featured in a slideshow of photos from Kidman’s August 19 post wrapping up her summer in Europe. Their two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14 — were included in several photos.

Come late July, Kidman had quietly applied for residency in Portugal, where she reportedly bought a sprawling home in a gated community outside Lisbon.
Urban, notably, wasn’t included in Kidman’s paperwork or at the in-person appointment with the immigration office.
In an obvious juxtaposition to their usually PDA-filled outings and gushing comments about one another, Kidman hasn’t once been seen at Urban’s High and Alive World Tour since it kicked off in May.
And in the past few months, there’s been a dramatic shift in Urban being open about discussing his wife.
In July, Urban left two Adelaide radio hosts in shock when he hung up on them live on air after they asked an intimate question about the actress.
Speaking on Mix 102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning weeks before kicking off the Aussie leg of his tour, the interview quickly went pear-shaped when hosts Hayley Pearson and Max Burford asked him to take part in the show’s “Wall of Truth” segment.
“What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV and radio?” Burford asked him before the line grew silent.
“What just happened here?” Burford asked as a producer said, “He’s disconnected from Zoom.”
“I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question,” the producer added. “He’s gone, see you Keith.”

Kidman has previously said she learned “resilience” from her strong mother, a note she reiterated just days ago in an interview with Forbes.
“I think having a career that has lasted this long is what has taught me about resilience,” she told the outlet.
