Niagara Falls teachers embrace program on science of reading

Buffalo schools have invested close to $1 million in Orton-Gillingham training programs to not only curb learning loss but serve as a building block for the future. With almost 400 students benefiting from tutoring services in Buffalo Public Schools this year alone, Read to Succeed Buffalo recently announced an expansion of its AARP Experience Corps programming to the Niagara Falls City School District. Elementary students at International School 45 last week received an academic treasure: a Buffalo Sabres phonics-focused book titled "Who Will Be King?" to commemorate the opening of the area's second Buffalo Sabres Literacy Hub. "I see so much potential in young people," Wil Green said, "and that's not just for the students that are receiving the supports and being tutored, but it's also for our tutors." Brainy Bulls, UB's blossoming tutor-mentoring program, is rewarding for all. Ben Tsujimoto can be reached at btsujimoto@buffnews.com, at (716) 849-6927 or on Twitter at @Tsuj10.
