The NHS has issued a stern warning to those experiencing a common Covid symptom, cautioning that ignoring the advice could lead to further complications. This comes as Covid cases remain high across the UK due to the prevalence of the latest dominant strains, Status and Nimbus. The most recent list of Covid symptoms on the NHS website includes a high temperature or shivering, a new, continuous cough, a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, shortness of breath, and feeling tired or exhausted. Other symptoms include an aching body, a headache, a sore throat, a blocked or runny nose, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, and feeling sick or being sick. The most common Nimbus symptoms include a severe sore throat (often felt while swallowing), persistent fatigue, a mild cough, nasal congestion or a runny nose, fever and muscle aches, sneezing, and digestive symptoms like nausea or diarrhoea (less common but possible). Stratus causes many of the same symptoms but is particularly known for causing a persistent dry cough, a 'razor blade' sore throat, and a hoarse or raspy voice. One symptom the strains have in common is a persistent cough. This symptom can not only cause discomfort but should be checked if it lasts more than three weeks. The NHS also warns against certain actions, as reported by the Mirror , as doing so could make the cough even worse. The health service advises: "Do not lie on your back if you have a cough – lie on your side or sit upright instead." When experiencing a cough, it's recommended to avoid lying flat on your back. This position can cause mucus to gather at the back of your throat, triggering additional coughing episodes. It happens due to postnasal drip and gravitational effects. To facilitate proper mucus drainage, it's advisable to keep yourself propped up with additional pillows or rest on your side. If postnasal drip persists for several days, it may lead to various complications, including a persistent cough, throat irritation, and voice changes. In more serious cases, it could result in significant complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or an infection spreading to the sinuses. It may also worsen asthma symptoms. Should your cough be severe or persist for an extended period, it's recommended to consult a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions, such as heart failure, as a dry nighttime cough can sometimes signal such problems. Treating Covid isn't always feasible. However, there are measures you can take to help alleviate some of the symptoms, including elevated temperature, coughing and breathing difficulties. Do
