NHL Insider eases Connor Bedard contract concern, cites Auston Matthews-Maple Leafs deal as example

The Chicago Blackhawks fans have wondered if Connor Bedard’s next contract could be shorter, instead of an eight-year deal. Bedard is eligible for an extension since July 1, but remains under his entry-level deal through the 2025-26 season. The young star has quickly become Chicago’s franchise centerpiece after winning the Calder Trophy in the 2023-24 season. With his success, talks about his next deal have drawn attention.Speaking Monday on B/R Open Ice, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said there’s no reason for concern. He explained that both sides (Bedard and Hawks) are simply taking their time."First off, no, not concerning," Seravalli said, about Bedard's contract. "Were Toronto Maple Leaf fans concerned when Austin Matthews signed a five-year deal out of the shoot of his entry-level deal? No."Seravalli's reference to Auston Matthews’ first extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs is right. Matthews signed a five-year contract instead of the maximum term. So, the same approach for Bedard would be normal and strategic, not alarming.Seravalli also noted that the timing affects contract length. If Bedard signs after July 1, the longest deal allowed drops from eight to seven years. He added that the salary cap is expected to rise, which could impact long-term negotiations."Two, I think it also depends on when Connor Bedard signs his deal," Seravalli said. "If he waits until after July 1, ... the most years that he could sign for anyway ratchets down to seven, ... And more than that, I just think the salary cap environment is changing."The Blackhawks and Connor Bedard's camp have stayed in contact. Seravalli emphasized that nothing has been finalized regarding the term or salary."I don't think there's anything that's been decided in terms of term or dollars when it comes to Connor Bedard; ... The two sides have remained in communication," Seravalli said. "It's not like they've put it on ice and said, "Hey, we're waiting until after the season's over," but... they haven't had any substantive talks of late."Connor Bedard can maximize his value with a short-term dealAuston Matthews' second regular contract with Toronto was again a bridge deal for just four years, worth $53 million. His contract ends after the 2027-28 season, making him eligible for another big raise. A similar path could help Bedard maximize value as the cap increases.Bedard continues to impress on the ice this season with 16 points in 13 games. The 20-year-old leads the Blackhawks in scoring and remains their top offensive threat. Chicago holds a 5-5-3 record and continues to show progress under its young core.
