The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed deep sorrow following a violent attack on its district office in Garu, Upper East Region, which claimed four lives and left five others injured. In a statement released on Tuesday October 21, NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe described the incident as a “tragic and unfortunate act of violence” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased and injured. According to the Upper East Regional Police Command, unidentified gunmen on motorbikes stormed the NHIA office on Monday, October 20, and opened fire indiscriminately on staff and bystanders in and around the facility. “We are profoundly saddened that such an incident occurred at a facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the public,” the statement read. “The NHIA denounces this act and is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other relevant security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.” A management team has been dispatched to Garu to provide immediate support to bereaved families, the injured, and NHIA staff affected by the attack. In response to the incident, the NHIA announced that it is reviewing security protocols across all regional and district offices to strengthen the safety and protection of its personnel and clients. “We urge calm among staff and the general public as investigations continue. The safety and wellbeing of our staff and clients remain a top priority for the Authority,” the statement added.
