On Monday, Marshawn Kneeland garnered national attention with his first NFL touchdown in the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Two days later, the 24-year-old Michigan native and Western Michigan University alumnus died by what authorities are calling a self-inflicted gunshot wound. RELATED: Dallas Cowboys player with Michigan ties died after pursuit, police say News of Kneeland’s death shocked the NFL community, with Cowboys players past and present, along with the broader NFL community, expressing condolences. “Sick (to) my stomach, my brotha man,” Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas posted on social media. Cowboys legend and NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith said he was heartbroken when he heard the news of Kneeland’s death. “Heartbroken,” Smith posted on social media. “Sending my deepest condolences to Marshawn Kneeland’s family and loved ones.” Kneeland’s former defensive coordinator with the Cowboys, Mike Zimmer, told NFL Network reporter Jane Slater remembered Kneeland as a great person that loved playing the game. NFL veteran and fellow defensive lineman J.J. Watt said it was difficult process the news. “Difficult to process the horrible news out of Dallas,” Watt wrote on social media. “Just tragic. RIP Marshawn Kneeland.” Former NFL player and current media member Emmanuel Acho reacted to the news by encouraging people to check in on their loved ones. “Remember to tell those you love that you love them,” Acho posted. “Remember to celebrate people. Remember to show up and show out for people. We’re working to ensure that players have the support they need, and our condolences are with Marshawn’s family and loved ones. “To our player members, please remember that navigating grief can be difficult. Lean on one another and take care of your well-being. We encourage you to reach out to us for wellness support or use the NFL Life Line.” Kneeland’s hometown Detroit Lions also expressed their condolences, with defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard calling him a “special kid,” recalling a visit with the Wyoming Godwin Heights grad ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.
