The Los Angeles Rams are gearing up to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10, but two players – outside linebacker Byron Young and tight end Davis Allen – have some unfinished business to tend to with the league office. Both players were among the swath of NFLers to receive fines from the NFL ahead of Sunday’s slate of games. In total, the Rams duo will forfeit $14,479 for their infractions. Rams OLB Byron Young Draws Fine vs Saints According to the NFL’s Football Operations portal, Young, who failed to record at least one half-sack for the first time this season in Week 9 against the Saints, was fined $8,417 for “A hit on a Quarterback” and, specifically, a “blow to the head/neck.” Young had a would-be sack on Saints QB Tyler Shough, who was standing in the pocket during the second quarter on a second down from the Rams’ 23-yard line. The hit drew a roughing the passer call, and Shough threw a touchdown on the next play. This marks the first fine of Young’s two-plus-season career, and it comes amid ongoing discussion about the league’s effort to protect players in defenseless positions, especially quarterbacks. Allen’s fine was less than Young’s, but it also occurred during the second quarter of the Rams’ win over the Saints. Rams TE Davis Allen Tagged With $6K Fine Allen’s fine ($6,062) was for “unnecessary roughness” after he grabbed the facemask of the Saints safety Jonas Sanker. He drew a flag on the play, nullifying his own touchdown reception. Three plays later, Rams kicker Joshua Karty missed a field goal attempt. Allen finished the game with three receptions for 37 yards, and the Rams won 34-10. Still, the team has lamented some of their mid-game lulls, and miscues like Allen’s, which took points off the board, cannot be as commonplace as they have been. Like Young, this marks the first fine of Allen’s two-plus-season career. The two were selected 77th and 175th overall, respectively, in the 2023 draft. They have played critical roles for the Rams this season. However, they are not the only Rams players who have drawn fines this season. Rams Add to List of Fines Safety Quentin Lake ($17,389, hip-drop tackle) and Tyler Higbee ($14,491, obscene gesture) were both fined for infractions during the Rams’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7. Kamren Kinchens ($23,186, hit on a defenseless player) was fined in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Former Rams safety John Johnson (undisclosed) and wide receiver Drake Stoops (PEDs) received suspensions before the season. Stoops also received a $93,334 fine. Safety Tanner Ingle ($4,666, impermissible use of helmet) was also fined during the preseason. In total, Rams players have surrendered $167,545 due to fines incurred from infractions since January. The Rams are the NFL’s least-penalized team. However, the infrequency of the Rams’ self-inflicted errors belies the significance of those moments. If they want to be the Super Bowl-caliber team many have them pegged for, they must clean up their errors. Some have already cost them this season. Allen and Young are the latest Rams to receive fines this season. Time will tell if the Rams can play disciplined enough to at least limit the number of times they must overcome their own mistakes.
