NFL analyst gave Patriots a tough grade after Keion White trade

"Should injuries strike, they might wish they had White back." Patriots receive lower trade grade after reported Keion White deal: The Patriots reportedly agreed to a pair of trades on Tuesday, with both defensive end Keion White and safety Kyle Dugger heading elsewhere. The decision to trade White — who, per multiple reports, was dealt to the 49ers in exchange for a sixth and a seventh-round draft pick in 2026 — has received scrutiny from NFL analysts. White, 26, had five sacks in 2024 as part of a much more active role in New England’s defense. This season has been a different story, as he was a healthy scratch in the recent win over the Browns. ESPN NFL analyst Seth Walder gave New England’s front office a harsh grade for the deal: C- (contrasted with the A- he gave the 49ers). “It was clear White fell out of favor in New England,” Walder wrote in his recap of the reported deal. “He was buried on a strong depth chart, with Harold Landry III and K’Lavon Chaisson having nice seasons on the edge and Milton Williams and Christian Barmore playing well inside. “But considering that the 6-2 Patriots should be harboring deep playoff expectations,” he added, “the compensation they received does not make up for the loss in depth. Should injuries strike, they might wish they had White back.” Not everyone was as critical of the move from New England’s perspective. Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated gave the deal a “B” letter grade, citing the team’s rebuilt defensive line and potential draft pick usage. “Maybe the picks New England gained in the trades for White and Dugger will be used to land a notable edge rusher before next week’s trade deadline,” Manzano speculated. “If they don’t, the Patriots will at least have more draft picks to continue adding players that align with their coaching philosophy.” The Patriots could of course also make additional trades. The NFL trade deadline is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 4. Trivia: Who is the Patriots’ all-time leader in sacks? (Answer at the bottom). Hint: He made five consecutive Pro Bowls between 1984-1988.
