The Star Market above the Mass. Pike in Newton that is temporarily closed after demolition work possibly released asbestos, officials said Wednesday. The Newton Health and Human Services Department closed the store at 33 Austin St. at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday after being notified of a potential health hazard, Shin-Ya Lao, the department commissioner said in a statement. Following the store’s closure, a full investigation was done by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the statement said. The department is conducting further investigations. According to the statement, Star Market will only be allowed to reopen if/when any potential asbestos is removed or contained. A spokesperson for Star Market said the company is taking the matter seriously. “At Star Market, the safety of our stores is a top priority,” the statement said. “We will continue to stay in close coordination with the Newton Health and Human Services Department as we work towards reopening the store."
