California Governor Gavin Newsom recently aimed at US President Donald Trump after the controversial comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in regard to the military’s fitness criteria. Hegseth, speaking at a meeting with generals and admirals, stated that the armed forces had become excessively overweight and preoccupied with ‘woke’ ideologies, advocating for a return to a tougher, more physically demanding military environment.Sarcastic Social Media ResponseIn response, Newsom posted a photo of Trump taken at a McDonald’s last October, accompanied by the ironic caption: “I guess the Commander in Chief needs to go!” His press office also released a doctored image showing Trump holding two McDonald’s burgers, with drones delivering additional fast food, captioned: “IT’S COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE TO SEE A FAT COMMANDER IN CHIEF IN THE HALLS OF THE WHITE HOUSE!”Hegseth Calls for Military ReformDuring the military gathering, Hegseth emphasized the requirement of reform, criticising what he explained as decades of decline. He said the attention should be directed on fitness and discipline, not on left-wing priorities, and urged a return to ‘high standards’ concerning both appearance and behavior. He also took focus at specific policies, such as grooming rules, which he stated were too lenient, mainly in permitting shaving waivers for Black service members.Defending Recent FiringsHegseth defended his recent termination of senior officers, that includes the Army’s top general and the Navy’s top admiral, both women or people of colour. He said to the audience: “This speech is about fixing decades of decay, some of it obvious, some of it hidden. Foolish and reckless political leaders set the wrong compass heading, and we lost our way. We became the ‘Woke Department.’ But not anymore.”Live EventsRegarding grooming criteria, he added: “Standards must be uniform, gender-neutral and high — if not, they’re not standards. They’re just suggestions, suggestions that get our sons and daughters killed.” He concluded by highlighting professional appearance: “The era of unprofessional appearance is over. No more beardos.” The audience reportedly sat in silence as he made his remarks.FAQs:Q1: Why did Governor Newsom criticize Trump?
