New York Mayoral Election RESULTS: Zohran Mamdani Makes History as NYC's First Muslim and South Asian Mayor

After months of intense campaigning, Democrat Zohran Mamdani has been elected the next Mayor of New York City, defeating Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent Andrew Cuomo, who entered the race after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Mamdani becomes New York's first Muslim and first South Asian mayor. He is also the youngest mayor in more than a century. New Yorkers turned out in record numbers this year. Before polls closed at 9 pm, the city's Board of Elections said that more than 2 million people had cast their ballots, the most in a mayoral election in New York City since John Lindsay won in 1969. What Did the Mayoral Fight Look Like? The campaign has drawn global attention as Mamdani and Cuomo offered New Yorkers a very different vision for the city. On one hand, Mamdani — a 34-year-old democratic socialist — said that he wants to raise taxes on the rich to pay for free buses and child care, and has attacked the former governor as corrupt and tarred by scandal. Cuomo, on the other hand, has positioned himself as a pro-business, pro-police moderate while attacking Mamdani as unprepared and lacking experience to run a city. According to the City Board of Elections, more than one million New Yorkers cast ballots on Tuesday after 12 hours of voting. Combined with the 735,000 early votes and mail-in ballots, the total reached nearly 1.85 million — far exceeding the 1.1 million votes recorded in 2021, when Eric Adams defeated Sliwa. There are more than 4.9 million registered voters in the city. The contest has also drawn the attention of US President Donald Trump, who, on Monday, had issued a dire warning to New Yorkers. In a post on Truth Social, Trump had said: "If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!" In June, Mamdani had dealt a major blow to Cuomo, defeating the three-term former governor in the Democratic primary, prompting Cuomo to mount an independent bid in the election.
