Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the new mayor of New York City after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo, who contested as an independent candidate in Tuesday’s election. The 34-year-old politician is an Indian origin and has made history as the city’s first Muslim and youngest mayor.Mamdani’s win has drawn national attention, especially after months of exchanges with US President Donald Trump, who had threatened to cut off funding to the city if Mamdani secured victory.Just like his campaigns, Mamdani’s first victory speech also had an electrifying nod to Bollywood. The newly elected mayor started his speech by thanking his mother, Mira Nair, for her unwavering support and quoted Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic words from his Tryst with Destiny speech: “A moment comes, but rarely in history.”Addressing a cheering crowd at his victory party, Mamdani then said, “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life, but let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandoned the many and answers only to the few.”During this speech, Zohran Mamdani also responded to Trump’s repeated threats, saying he had just four words for the US president: “Turn the volume up.”As Mamdani concluded his victory speech, the Bollywood hit Dhoom Machale from the film Dhoom(2004) began to play. He stood on stage with his wife, Rama Duwaji, and his mother, Mira Nair. The newly elected mayor then walked off the stage while the energetic Hindi track played in the background. In no time, social media buzzed with reactions. One user on X wrote, “This is iconic.” Another wrote, “Walking off as the NYC mayor-elect to Dhoom Machale, possibly the most iconic thing Zohran has ever done.”Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, won the mayoral election with a progressive agenda, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Also Read: From Queens Lawmaker to New York City Mayor: A Look At The Rise of Zohran Mamdani
